Having spent a lot of time reading Einhard’s Vita Caroli and Notker’s Charlemagne, and even the fictional legends in Bulfinch, etc., I love Charles and the Charlemagne legend to death, but that quote absolutely drives me crazy, being that it’s just whole cloth that has virtually nothing to do with the incredibly awesome stuff he and his father did do (exempli gratia, cutting the Devil in half in the steam baths of Aachen).
